Practical guide
How to use online tools with less data exposure
Understand where a calculation runs and what leaves the browser before entering data.
Check where your input goes
A browser-only tool can calculate without uploading its input. A live lookup must send the minimum required request to a server or named external data source. Check that distinction on the tool page before use.
Enter only the data needed
- Use test or reduced data when the complete source is unnecessary.
- Do not paste credentials, recovery codes or unrelated personal data into a utility.
- For files, prefer local hashing or inspection when an upload is not required.
Record assumptions behind results
Record the input assumptions, time and data source when a result supports an operational decision. Network, registry and DNS observations can change after a lookup, and planning calculators depend on the estimates supplied.
Clear sensitive work after use
When a tool promises session-only processing, leaving or reloading the page should clear the working input and result. Close the page after use on a shared device and manage any downloaded output according to its sensitivity.
